65 talented Malaysian youth as they performed a Broadway show in conjunction with the George Town Festival 2012 "

Broadway talent in Penang

On June 16, U.S. Ambassador Paul W. Jones, together with the Chief Minister of Penang Lim Guan Eng, witnessed the ‘unveiling’ of 65 talented Malaysian youth as they performed a Broadway show in conjunction with the George Town Festival 2012.

The Broadway show, which received rave reviews from the audience, was the culmination of training and coaching under the tutelage of American Voices via their YES (Youth Excellence on Stage) Academy program.  The YES program in Malaysia was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur.

The participants, aged between 16 and 32, were chosen after a highly selective audition.   The organizers of the festival put on an extra show since there was a great demand for the ‘Malaysian’ Broadway show.  Both shows opened to packed halls with a seating capacity of 300 audiences.

The U.S. Embassy was proud to partner with the George Town Festival in a number of programs this year, including Broadway and Hip Hop workshops and performances with world-class American performers at Straits Quay, a photography workshop and photo exhibit with American photographer Justin Mott, and the Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Photo Exhibition.
