Penang is in the limelight once again as George Town gained the eight placing in The Guardian’s list of 40 “Holiday hotspots: where to go in 2014” published on 3 January.
The travel feature mentioned the UNESCO heritage city of George Town as one of South East Asia’s “hottest destinations” since 2008, covering its delicious street food, fine dining, boutique hotels, latest drinking spot and its popular month-long George Town festival.
After George Town is Alberta in Canada at number 9 and Bordeaux in France at number 10. At the top, the first on the list is Cape Town, South Africa followed by Uzès, France; Austin, Texas, US; Carmarthenshire, UK; Kolkata, India; islands of São Tomé and Príncipe in Africa; and Alaçatı, Turkey.

In December, the British national daily also included Penang in its list of top 15 best street art around the world. It was the only selection from Asia, alongside street art from Ireland, Holland, Columbia, Afghanistan, London, Melbourne and more. The mural depicting little children on a bicycle is the most famous among locals and tourists alike with many of them posing there for photographs daily.
